TEMPLE, TX — A Temple building brought back to its original grandeur is recognized with a historic marker.

The Hub building, located on South Second Street, is now the home of bustling retail space. However, in the past, it served as a harness shop back at the turn of the century, later a national guard armory, manufacturer and more.

Developers Joe and Pam Sheppard preserved the buildings original architecture.

“These buildings are the fabric of our really cool downtown,” said Joe Sheppard.

The 22,000 square foot facility features original brick walls and concrete flooring. During renovations, they found a welcome surprise above eight-foot drop ceiling tiles.

“We took a broomstick and pushed those up. Low and behold there were 16 foot stamped tin ceilings,” said Sheppard.

The city hosted a ceremony gifting the marker to the owners Friday.

The historic marker program has been a city initiative since 2008. Citywide preservation efforts will take time, but there are a number of projects in progress.

“Downtown Temple in five years will be unrecognizable,” said Sheppard.
