COPPERAS COVE, TX — William Devauri Ames' loved ones are calling for change after he was killed in a hit-and-run.

On Saturday, the community stood hand in hand in his honor during a candlelight service.

A number of them signed a petition at the vigil calling for "safer roads in Copperas Cove."

Ames' "soul brother" Joshua Weir said they "started a petition to let everybody know we want things to change. Side walks, speed bumps, at least two more stop signs."

Ames was hit by a car in the 600 block of Urbantke Lane.

"Heard a big old thump and I looked up, my brother's flying in the air," said Weir. "We walked right here and then we turned on Urbantke. About maybe 6 to 8 feet down the street is where he got hit. He got flung at least 60 to 70 feet."

The driver, identified as Lance Tyler Anderson, was arrested.

The petition was signed by community members on Saturday and they plan to present it to city council on Tuesday.
