WACO, TX — The Waco Police Department is warning the community of a scam where suspects are illegally selling homes on Facebook.

The department says a house well get posted in Facebook sell groups as real-estate investment properties for a low price. Waco PD says the individuals are posting homes they don't actually own or have the rights to.

After they are contacted about purchasing the homes, they will remove the home from the site and attempt to take a cash down payment on the home.

The suspects have historically now told the person to drive by and look at the house, but will be unavailable to show their property.

Nearly all of the contact with the suspects have been through Facebook Messenger.

During the investigation of one of these cases, detectives learned that the suspect was actually allowed to follow the victim back to their residence to retrieve cash for their down payment.

The department is asking that when you are purchasing a house to verify the legitimacy of the sale and owner of the property first.
