WACO, TX. — A market is providing fresh produce and other needed products to a Waco food desert.

For the last two and a half years, the Jubilee Food Market has changed the lives of many in Waco.

The founder and president of Mission Waco, Jimmy Dorrell, says people used to walk over two miles just to get to a grocery store. When the market was put in place, Dorrell said it made the struggles of many go away, providing an oasis in the North Waco Food Desert.

"Part of our goal is how can we connect with the suburbs and with folks that are isolated and under-resourced," said Dorrell.

Dorrell said this store also supports the community by providing jobs for people who live nearby.

"Keep money in the neighborhood, kids gets to work and money flows in here," Dorrell continued.

Community groups from Dallas, Houston and Austin have visited the Jubilee Market to learn more about how it works and do something similar in their cities.

Jubilee Market is located at 1505 North 15th Street near Colcord Avenue.
