HEWITT, TX — Christmas is over, which means trash cans are filled with boxes from unwrapped gifts. While we might not think anything of it, authorities warn this could be a invitation for thieves.
According to the Hewitt Police Department, thieves window shop based on what's in your trash can. If an empty TV box is in the trash can, that means a brand new TV is in the house.
To protect your home, Hewitt PD says break down packages and put them inside of the trash can. You should also avoid putting out your trash or recycling until the last possible second.
Before putting out the boxes, record the serial numbers on electronic items or items of larger value. That way, if your home does get broken into, authorities can better track down the items.
