WACO, TX — As more schools go back to in-person learning it's important for parents to become hyper-aware of how their kids are feeling day to day.
Whitney, China Spring and Midway ISD have all had students test positive for COVID-19 in the past week.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there has been a 21% spike in child cases over the last two weeks.
Kids are less likely to contract the virus but that doesn't mean they're prone to getting it. Parents should talk with their kids about what's going on in the world, that way they can understand why the mask and handwashing is important.
"Talk about it in a matter of fact manner with their children, not a the world is going to end kind of phrasing. But yeah just for their health for their safety just tell them how important it is to wash their hands," DM, Jacquelin Dewbre with Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest said.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 400 thousand children have contracted the virus. Schools are also taking extra precautions and requiring parents to do a temperature check on their kids before dropping them off at school.
"It doesn’t take long to take a temperature so it’s pretty quick as far as that goes but a temperature is not the only vital sign you have to look at either," Dewbre said.
According to the CDC, kids may experience a headache, stomach ache or sore throat. They could also feel other common symptoms of COVID-19.
Along with checking their temperature parents need to ask their kids questions on how they're feeling daily to prevent the possible spread at a school district.
