CHINA SPRING, Texas — “My hobby has become my business and I need an outlet to sell my product," Kendra Tatsh, owner of Tatsh House Rustic Essentials, said.
That outlet is the China Spring Farmers Market. Tatsh started selling her products to make extra money on the side.
“I teach and I drive buses and that pays my bills. But it doesn’t help me do special things like buying Easter baskets for my grandsons," said Tatsh.
Over the four years the market has been open, it’s attracted more shoppers and the community.
“And the more vendors we get, the more people we have and it just keeps growing. So it also brings extra income into the home of the vendors," Joanne Martinez, coordinator of the China Spring Farmers Market, said.
There are moments when Tatsh is low on cash, and the money made from the Farmers Market comes in handy. Tatsh told me she makes homemade salsa, pasta sauce, and fermented vegetables.
Martinez believes it’s a fair trade-off between buyers and sellers.
“It’s something that the community really needs. We need something that we can go to that we know that comes from the people behind the booth. Everything is made by the people behind the booth," Martinez said.
With originality comes a lot of time and effort. Tatsh told me she spends hours every week prepping for one day.
"It takes an average of 20 hours a week to get ready for the Farmers Market," Tatsh said.
