COPPERAS COVE, TX — The Copperas Cove Fire Department says they may resort to using alternative personal protection equipment soon.

Copperas Cove Fire Chief Michael Neujahr said crews are preparing to use alternative equipment due to the enormous national demand for healthcare supplies and medical-grade face masks.

"All of our firetrucks and ambulances have self-contained breathing apparatus (air packs) on them," said Chief Neujahr. "These devices provide positive-pressure breathing air for the responder, while at the same time, providing an element of personal protection from the spread of COVID-19."

Chief Neujahr said in the near future, it will not be unreasonable to see a Paramedic in one of these air packs come to your door if you call 911.

People should not be scared if a paramedic shows up with these air packs.

"Rest assured that there is not any hidden underlying reason why we would need to use these, or cause you additional concern. We are merely providing a safe operational working environment for our crews," said the Chief.

The air packs have microphones and speakers to help understand each other a little better while the Paramedic is wearing it.
