WOODWAY, TX — Fifth-grade student Caleb Brooks at Midway ISD's River Valley Intermediate won the Region 9 Take Care of Texas Kids Art Contest from among 5,200 entries. His artwork depicts a setting sun casting a cowboy’s shadow over a Texas landscape.

Students submit their artwork of how they, along with their friends and family, help keep the air and water clean, conserve water and energy, and reduce waste.

His artwork will be on display along with 15 other winning pieces at the Texas Commission for Environmental Quality’s office in Austin. As a prize, Caleb received a Samsung Galaxy tablet and a goody bag for each of his classmates.

Caleb’s art teacher, Amy Chandler, played a special part in Caleb’s artistic development. She also taught Caleb’s mother, Paige Ostrom Brooks, while at Robinson High School. After 30 years total in public education, Mrs. Chandler will be retiring in June.
