WACO, TX — Waco is still working toward its "music friendly community" designation.

But now that COVID-19 has shut down venues, the local music scene is finding ways to adapt.

Keep Waco Loud and Rogue Media are bringing back their popular open mic night event in a different way.

"March 16th was the first one we missed. So it's been about a month now," said Keep Waco Loud Co-Founder Katie Selman.

KWL started open mic night at Klassy Glass in downtown Waco almost a year ago, discovering dozens of local talent and connecting them to the community.

"It became where we were all family. We came out to support each other," said Selman. "People would get up and dance and jump and cheer."

"It feels like a part of my heart has been ripped out," said KWL Co-Founder Jacob Green.

Katie and Jacob have been brainstorming on how to bring open mic night back amid stay-at-home orders.

A livestream is planned with multiple artists, live hosts and even specials from Klassy Glass.

During the livestream, you can order a meal and wine for delivery, sit back and tune in.

"The past 8 months have been a huge growing point of the Waco music scene," said Selman.

He says helping local musicians is as easy as streaming their music on Spotify.

"Just put it on repeat. Give these artists extra listens," said Green.

KWL plans to make Monday's open mic live stream a regular event until they can gather again.

"In the hardest of times is when the most creative and amazing art gets made," said Green.

The open mic livestream starts Monday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. on the Keep Waco Loud Facebook page.
