Man shot, killed after verbal altercation turns deadly

KILLEEN, TX — A man was shot and killed after a verbal altercation turned deadly Monday morning.

Authorities say around 5:10 a.m. on June 1, officers were dispatched to the 600 block of West Green Avenue regarding a 9-1-1 call about a gunshot victim.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers started to perform live-saving measures until paramedics arrived.

The victim was transported to Carl R. Darnall Medical Center in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and a male acquaintance were involved in a verbal altercation that became physical. During the altercation, the two men struggled over a handgun when the gun went off, striking the victim.

The victim, 35-year-old Christopher McWhoter, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division continue to investigate the case. Authorities say information will be released as it becomes available.
