CENTRAL TEXAS — Central Texans remain under an Extreme Heat Warning Monday. San Saba and the Brazos Valley remain under a heat advisory. The high temperature in Waco is expected to hit 106 degrees. On Sunday, we tied a 2010 record by reaching 107 degrees. Our record today is 107 degrees from 2023.
The feels-like temperatures are expected to run between 106 and 111 degrees this afternoon. It is important that residents stay hydrated and take frequent cooling off breaks working outside. Another important reminder is to not leave any person or animal in your car while running errands, etc. The car can become deadly very quickly in this type of heat. Texas leads the nations in hot car deaths. Already two children have died in this state this year, after being left in a hot car.
Another significant issue with weather is the extreme fire danger risk. All of Central Texas is very dry with some areas showing signs of a moderate drought. The dry vegetation, lower humidity and extreme heat all create a positive environment for fires to thrive. Add wind gusts up to 25 mph this afternoon, and you have an extreme fire danger risk for half of Central Texas. The other areas are mostly in the very high category. The fire danger threat should be taken very seriously. All counties in Central Texas are currently under a burn ban.
There is a positive side to this forecast. Temperatures will remain in the triple digits but will drop closer to 100 degrees as the week continues. We have a small opportunity for rain in the northern counties Tuesday. The best opportunity arrives Thursday as a front attempts to enter our area. At this point it's a 30% chance. Temperatures will drop but humidity will rise with the approaching moisture. So the heat-index will remain between 105 and 108 degrees this week.
In the tropics, we are tracking two disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean. Both have a 50% chance of developing into a tropical system in seven days.
