WACO, TX — The $341 million project to widen Interstate 35 began on April 28.

TxDOT said the project will span from N. Loop 340 to 12th Street and will include expanding I-35 mainlanes to four lanes in each direction, as well as improving frontage roads and interchanges.

The project is expected to be complete in May 2024.

Here is what to expect:

  • On April 28, northbound lanes will be closed in various locations for restriping lanes and setting barrier walls to compress traffic into two lanes for the duration of the project.
  • There will be various short and long term closures on the southbound frontage road to prepare for construction.
  • On May 1, the southbound exit ramp for 4th/5th Street will be closed permanently for the duration of the project. Traffic will exit to the 4th/5th street area using University Parks Drive.
  • Several streets between 12th and 17th will be blocked at the access road.
  • In mid-May, the pedestrian bridge over I-35 at 8th Street will be demolished.

All work is weather permitting.
