Padre Island officials report influx of sea stars washing ashore

Posted

Officials from the Padre Island National Seashore said that they are seeing a lot of sea stars washing up on the beach.

They believe they are all banded starfish.

They said they do not know why so many have been washing up to shore, but they said it is a cool sight to see.

They also reminded beach-goers to check and see if the starfish is still alive before taking it with you. This is the message from their Facebook page:

Remember, before taking any beach-find home, check to see if it's still alive; if it is, leave it there, if not, you're free to take it with you! To see if a starfish is still alive, turn it upside down and watch to see if the feet (the hundreds of tiny tubes) are moving. If the starfish is still alive, please put them in the water, it will give them a better chance of surviving!
