On Saturday, Texas turned 173.
On Dec. 29 1845, Texas became the 28th state.
Nine years before, organizers of the Republic of Texas signed the Texas Declaration of Independence in March of 1836.
Texas's roots began in Washington, Texas, once the state capitol and where they signed the declaration.
"This is the town site of where the convention of 1836 would take place, which would declare Texas as a republic and no longer part of Mexico." Washington on the Brazos Lead Interpreter, Jordan Anderson said.
There is a replicated building where the Texas Declaration of Independence was signed. They park rangers had to rebuild Independence Hall because of a fire in the early 1900's that cleared most of the town.
After the fire there was a post later built that marked where the building once stood. That's how park rangers knew where to build the new Independence Hall we see today.
The site has been preserved for hundreds of years so many can see where the first settlers of Texas once lived.
"An appreciation of how we got hear today because it wasn't easy, it wasn't something that happened overnight." Anderson said.
"Remembering where we came from and why we as Texans are so proud to be here today."
