Some people in Bell County will soon see a slight increase to their utility bill.

On Tuesday, with a four to three vote, the Killeen City Council approved a new city ordinance that will add a street maintenance fee to the utility bill of Killeen residents.

The monthly utility fee of $6.47 cents will be added for every single-family household to cover the costs maintaining local streets.

The city said the new ordinance ensures the money collected will go to repairing existing roads and cannot be used for new roads or construction.

“Now we gonna get this problem solved, stop kicking the can down the road and move on and make Killeen a better place to live in. Where people will want to come and raise their family and have a quality of life,” said city council member Shirley Fleming.

The city will begin implementing the new fees immediately, but they said the plan is to have it fully implemented by July.
