COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WALB) - One child is dead and one is still recovering after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the road to get on a school bus Thursday morning in Colquitt County.
The boys’ mother, Amanda Wolfe, has confirmed that 10-year-old Noah Palmer has died from his injuries after the accident. Dylan Palmer, 7, is still recovering at a hospital in Tallahassee, Florida.
Georgia State Patrol is handling the death investigation.
According to our sister station, WTXL, Monica Cutts, 25, has been arrested and charged with running a school bus stop-on, driving with a suspended license, vehicular homicide in the first degree and causing serious bodily injury.
Noah was taken to Macon for treatment before he died from his injuries Thursday evening.
Wolfe said she was with Noah in Macon while her husband was in Tallahassee.
But, as Wolfe was headed toward the hospital, she wanted just one thing.
"I probably won’t be able to, but I just want to hold him,” said Wolfe.
Wolfe told WALB that since Thursday morning’s accident, Noah had remained in critical condition until he was declared brain dead and later died.
Wolfe said that when she saw Noah, she knew it was very serious.
“He didn’t look good,” said Wolfe.
The accident happened after a normal Thursday morning took a devastating turn.
Family members said that the two brothers were hit by a car while crossing the street to get to the school bus.
Wolfe explained that the boys take the school bus to Hamilton Elementary in Hartsfield every day.
She said a family member said he heard a loud crash from outside and quickly called her.
When she received the call, Wolfe immediately came back home. Her boys were still there.
"They had my middle son in the ambulance, and my youngest one was on the ground by the road,” said Wolfe.
Dylan, 7, is now stable at a hospital in Tallahassee, Florida.
Wolfe said Noah and Dylan were hit by a car that passed the school bus on Thigpen Trail, despite it having its stop sign out.
Wolfe said that she couldn’t believe what she was seeing when she got home.
"I ran straight to Dylan, the one on the ground. I went to him and made sure he was okay, and then I got up and went to Noah,” said Wolfe.
Noah, the middle brother, had the more severe injuries because officials said they believe he tried to protect Dylan from the car.
Wolfe’s boys were later air-lifted to separate hospitals. She said her oldest son, Landon Bass, was with their babysitter.
The incident happened around 6:45 a.m.
Colquitt County Schools Superintendent Doug Howell said Cutts ran the stop sign on the bus.
Cutts is being held in the Colquitt County Jail, according to WTXL.
GSP is still investigating the incident.
