A new electronic interface, iReferral, is hoping to save more lives involved with organ and tissue donation. Southwest Transplant Alliances (STA) is one of the largest organ procurement organizations (OPO) in the United States. STA has partnered with CHRISTUS Mother Frances Hospital-Tyler to work with this new interface.

Once the hospital needs a potential organ or tissue donor the interface with notify STA and then delivers referral information for where they can find the potential donor.

Not only will this allow a timely notification, but it will also allow the nurses to focus on the patient, rather than being away from the bedside, tied up on the phone to relay important information to Southwest Transplant,” said Mike Breen Eckhard, MSN, RN-BC, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Informatics Officer, CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

It is required that all hospitals refer all deaths to the local OPO. This is considered a time-consuming task done by nurses manually making phone calls to the OPO and with iReferral the process is done electronically and in real time as the nurse enters the patient’s data.
