An officer from the Italy Police Department was hit by a car on I-35 Monday morning.
DPS said that the officer was called out to the area because of debris on the road. The officer located the debris, stopped the patrol vehicle on the right shoulder and activated the emergency lights to warn traffic. Traffic was slowing down for the officer who was removing debris, but for an unknown reason the driver of a white 2001 Dodge Ram pickup went into a side skid and hit the officer.
The driver, identified as 21-year-old Austin Honeycutt, of Brandon, was not injured.
The officer, identified as 40-year-old Lt. Guy Saxton was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The northbound lanes of I-35 at Highway 34 were shut down for a few hours so the Department of Public Safety could investigate.
