Killeen ISD educates parents on internet safety

Killeen ISD held an educational meeting for parents at Palo Alto Middle School about the dangers of social media on Thursday.

Topics discussed in the meeting included the many types of social media platforms, cyberbullying, the threat of online predators and ways to increase safety while their child is on the internet.

The school district said it's important for parents to be aware of what’s out there and to be proactive when it comes to internet safety.

“You’ve got kids that get on Instagram, they get on Snapchat, they get on Kik Messenger and some of these other apps that parents aren’t aware of. I think by educating them, they can be more cognoscente of what their kids are getting into and what some of these sexual predators are getting onto," KISD Police Chief Ralph Disher said.

The school district said the first step to improving a child's online safety is to limit the time they spend on devices.

For parents who would like to know more, they are hosting another meeting at 9 a.m. on Friday at Palo Alto Middle School in Killeen.
