A new STEAM program is making its way into the Killeen Independent School District.
STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
Thanks to a new after-school club called Tech Wizards, the program will be at one elementary school in Killeen for the upcoming school year.
"We are part of the national mentoring program, we are based in Temple as part of the 4-H Urban Outreach Program," 4-H program assistant Tessa Bradshaw said.
The 4-H program is designed to help get kids that are classified as underserved youths across the country, interested in STEAM.
"OJJDP or the office of juvenile justice and Delinquency program identifies underserved, or at-risk, youths to include truancy, military youth or students who are in and out of the justice system," Bradshaw said.
Thanks to a $72,000 Tech Wizards grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency, it's a program that will now be offered in Killeen ISD for the first time.
"Tech Wizards is a 12-month mentoring program with a ratio of four students to one mentor, and the mentor is typically someone that has a passion for STEAM," Bradshaw said.
The after-school program will kick off at Saegart Elementary in August. It's something that Bradshaw is encouraging parents to get their kids involved in.
"Whatever these other kids that we are helping every day their passions are, we want to key into that and really help them grow in their love," Bradshaw said.
Tech Wizards will be offered to third, fourth and fifth graders and there will be an open house to learn more about the club on Aug. 24 during meet the teacher night.
