Traffic on Interstate 35 in Waco is moving normally after two separate crashes occurred almost simultaneously early Saturday morning.
The crashes happened about 7:30 a.m. on northbound I-35 on the 4th and 5th Street Bridge.
Police say the first wreck involved an 18-wheeler that lost control and struck the inside bridge wall. The impact caused a section of concrete wall to be completely knocked away. The truck then bounced across all lanes and hit the outside wall, and began leaking fuel.
The second crash involved another 18-wheeler and a pickup. All three lanes of the interstate were closed until about 12:30 p.m. and interstate traffic was diverted at 8th Street.
Two people were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. It was raining heavily at the time of these crashes.
Waco Police Sgt. Patrick Swanton says concrete barriers had to be brought in and placed in front of the hole on the left side of the bridge, while the fuel spill had to be cleaned up on the right side of the highway.
The area under the bridge on 4th Street was also closed during this time because of the repair work being done on the highway wall.
