MIDLAND, TX — The Midland Police Department said they are mourning one of their own. Office Nathan Heidelberg was killed while responding to a burglar alarm on Tuesday morning.
Heidelberg had been with the department for five years and was a field training officer.
He responded to an alarm call at a home along with three other officers. After announcing their presence at the door, the homeowner believed his home was getting broken into and fired at the officers.
He hit Heidelberg above his protected vest. The homeowner, David Wilson, was arrested and charged with manslaughter.
"Nathan treated others with respect, regardless of their demeanor or actions. He was a tireless public servant who devoted every ounce of energy to this profession, the citizens and his fellow officers. We have lost not only a great officer, but a loving brother and the most positive example of what we should all aspire to be." police chief Seth Herman said in a Facebook post.
When Heidelberg's body was brought to Tarrant County for an autopsy, he was escorted by a line of police officers.
Between 3 - 3:30 p.m. there will be a line of police vehicles from I20 W, heading to I35W - the line will be escorting a fallen @MidlandTXPD to the #TarrantCounty ME's office.@tarrantcountyso
