WACO, TX — The Annual Starburst Junior Golf Classic, one of the largest junior golf tournaments in the state, returns to the Greater Waco area June 17-18, 2019 for another year. Managed by the Greater Waco Chamber and sponsored by Mars Wrigley Confectionery, the Starburst Junior Golf Classic will host hundreds of players from ages of 7 to 19 across two area courses. Registration is open now and will close at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12.

Courses for the Starburst Junior Golf Classic include:

  • Cottonwood Creek Golf Club, Waco
  • Ridgewood Country Club, Waco

Each year, players ages 7-19 from across the country converge in the Heart of Texas for a competitive tournament taking place on multiple golf courses around the Greater Waco area with the “home” course located at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course. It is a family-oriented, two-day competitive tournament designed for both novice and expert junior golfers. The Starburst Junior Golf Classic is a part of the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and a Performance Based Entry Process. Our top finishers in the 11 through 19 age divisions and Championship divisions will receive AJGA performance stars as part of our partnership.

“The Starburst Junior Golf Classic is a premier junior golf tournament designed for junior golfers at all levels. We are proud to host participants from throughout the U.S. and are excited to have this opportunity to showcase our community once again,” said Amanda Haygood, director of special events for the Greater Waco Chamber. “Our goal with this tournament is to offer junior players an opportunity that will challenge and build their golf tournament experiences.”

The Starburst Junior Golf Classic will kick off with activities and vendors at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course on Sunday, June 16. Players can pick up their player swag bag, tournament pairings and all caddie apparel, participate in a College Coach Q&A session, enjoy dinner, practice their swings and watch 1,300 golf balls fall from the sky for the Greater Waco Chamber’s Helicopter Golf Ball Drop.

“The popular Helicopter Ball Drop is a unique aspect of our tournament that really engages all of our players and their families,” added Haygood. “Players – and anyone in the community – can purchase a $5 raffle ticket to match a golf ball. It’s an impressive sight, watching up to 1,300 golf balls be dropped from a helicopter. And the owner of the ball that lands in, or nearest, to the golf hole will win $1,000!”

Additionally, the Greater Waco Chamber and Northern Texas PGA are proud to provide two Starburst Junior Golf Classic participants with a $2,500 college scholarship. All tournament participants who have completed their junior or senior year of high school during the spring of 2019 will be entered in for a drawing for two $2,500 scholarships. The tournament participant must be present at the drawing to receive the scholarship. The scholarship drawing will take place during dinner at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course on Sunday, June 16.
