BELTON, TX — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team struggled to get the bats going as the Cru dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Southwestern University Saturday in Belton. UMHB lost 13-7 and 9-1 to fall to 3-12 on the season. The Pirates improve to 8-2 on the year with the two victories.

Southwestern used a huge game from Daniel Montgomery, Jr. to take a 13-7 victory in game one. Montgomery’s three-run homer was the biggest hit in the Pirates’ five-run second inning. The Cru scored three in the bottom of that inning on Mitch Patterson’s RBI single and Jacob Dellipoali’s two-run double. Montgomery added a two-run homer as Southwestern added four runs in the top of the fourth. Garrett Gonzales tripled home a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut it to 9-4. Montgomery doubled home two more runs in a four-run fifth for the Pirates. Back-to-back sacrifice flies pulled UMHB to within 13-6 in the bottom of the fifth and Dellipoali drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice. Ross Baer took the loss for the Cru to drop to 1-2. Patterson and Jack Herbert had two hits apiece for UMHB. Montgomery drove in seven runs on four hits for Southwestern. Travis Harvey picked up the win to even his record at 1-1.

Southwestern broke open a tight game in the later innings in the 9-1 game two victory. The Cru grabbed an early lead on Jason Samuel’s RBI single in the bottom of the first. The Pirates tied the game in the top of the third, took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning and grabbed control with four runs in the top of the sixth. Southwestern added two runs in the seventh and one more in the eighth. Patterson had two of UMHB’s eight hits in the game. Aaron Edelmon took the loss after striking out nine and giving up four earned runs in five and two-thirds innings. Machi Horne earned the win for the Pirates with three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief work. Six different players had two hits apiece for Southwestern in the contest.

UMHB will return to action with a 6 pm home non-conference game against Blackburn on Wednesday. The Cru returns to American Southwest Conference play with a three-game home series against University of the Ozarks on Friday and Saturday.
