AUSTIN, TX — With an average of 3,500 deaths a year on Texas roadways, TxDOT says 96 percent of those roadway deaths are due to driver error.
By having an eye catching sign to remind you to buckle up, TxDOT hopes that these signs make you think twice when on the road.
It's a small committee that creates the slogans. The signs must have a serious overtone, even if the message is light and humorous.
The idea started in 2018 and feedback from the community is a positive one.
Signs which read witty phrases like "the eyes of TX are upon you, buckle up," and "every bunny drive egg-cellent" are enough to put a smile on anyone's face.
Rick Bodiford, who was traveling from Alabama, loved to see the many signs as he visits Texas.
"Eye catching, they were cute. It's different enough that you see them you pay attention to them because of the sayings and the things that's on them," Bodiford said.
Even he admitted to forgetting his seat belt from time to time, but he's thankful the signs are there to remind him.
"Driving safe, obeying the speed limit, it's the only way to go down there. You see accidents every day read them in the paper, and it never fails that there's going to be a fatality or something critical just because they weren't wearing their seatbelts," Bodiford said.
