With just one week left until Christmas, It's important to make sure you're checking your list twice and locking your doors.
Criminals looking to get their hands on what you have under your tree take advantage of the busy holiday shopping season by preying on empty homes and unlocked vehicles.
Michael Dennis, Account Executive with Secure 24/7 in Killeen, said that the best way to avoid becoming a victim of theft is to utilize a security system in your home if it is available.
“It gets the police there a lot quicker, and it’s also a very big deterrent, because the siren is going off and beeping and hollering,” Dennis said.
Even without a security system, Dennis said that there are other ways to keep your home safe
“If you have two vehicles, the one closest to the door, even if you are leaving town, maybe you should move that other vehicle to the other door because a lot of people look for the first vehicle missing because that’s when they know the person’s gone,” Dennis said.
Dennis said most thefts he hears about from his customers could have been prevented by simply remembering to lock their door.
“9 out of 10 times those cars have been unlocked. Don’t leave invitations,” Dennis said.
