Temple Animal Shelter is taking action to limit the number of pet adoptions made as a last-minute Christmas gift.

Laurie Simmons, City of Temple Public Relations Manager, said that this year the shelter is offering those who wish to pay for adoption fees as a gift the opportunity to do so by issuing a gift certifcate.

“We have a program where you can come in and pay a pet adoption fee and give that as a gift,” Simmons said.

The program is designed to prevent gifting a pet to an incompatible owner who may end up returning the animal to the shelter. Simmons also said the policy is a demonstration of the city’s commitment to establishing a pet owner’s relationship with a pet prior to adoption.

“We have a pet interaction area so they can be outside, meet and greet with different pets and really choose the pet that is right for them and their family,” Simmons said.
