COPPERAS COVE, TX — Wicked weather over the past two weeks has left many families dealing with severe property damage.

As another storm bears down on Central Texas, homeowners are checking their insurance coverage to make sure they are protected.

"Your typical homeowners policy is going to cover typical perils fire, lightning storm, wind and hail damages,” said Rick Williams, owner of Premier Insurance in Copperas Cove.

But not all policies are the same.

"Certain policies have named perils, which are the specific perils, but most of those policies are pretty broad coverage,” said Williams.

He encourages customers to become fully versed on their policies, and ask their agent specific questions about different scenarios that can help clear confusion.

Creating a home inventory that can be shared in the event of a loss can spare the policyholder headaches.

“A video inventory is a real good way to just go around with a camcorder or your phone - if you make a video copy of it, it’s good of course. Or a written inventory in a safety deposit box or leave it with your insurance agency something off premises,” said Williams.

Policy holders are encouraged to do their research before hiring someone to make repairs. Construction scams are more common after a storm.

Flood coverage is something experts say is worth considering, even if you don’t live in a flood plain. If you live in a lower risk area, it is often one of the most affordable products.

“60 to 70 percent of flooding occurs in areas that are not in a flood zone. So it really is a good idea,” said Williams.
