The academy, housed at the old Crossroads High School, was designed in response to growing demand for flexible learning options following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Amanda Crawley, deputy superintendent, said the district wanted to ensure every student had access to a learning path that worked for them.

"We want to make sure we had a pathway for every student and every student that needs that level of flexibility," Crawley said.

Crawley said the pandemic helped demonstrate what flexible learning could look like for students.

"COVID was really the launch, I think, of what we can do… there are kids that really enjoy this. They prefer it and they do really well in these online settings," Crawley said.

The academy recently received state recognition, becoming one of only four campuses in Texas selected for a grant supporting this type of learning model. Crawley said the district's existing infrastructure made the transition possible.

"One of the best predictors of success is past success… we had a lot of the structure already in place through our alternative campus… so we were able to transition and kind of see a path forward for this virtual campus," Crawley said.

More than 160 students have already enrolled in the program. Enrollment remains open through October.
