UPDATE: Bell County assault suspect in custody, DPS says

UPDATE 6:55 P.M.:
The wanted man for an assault on a Texas DPS trooper was found and is now in custody, Texas DPS Sergeant Bryan Washkso says.

The Bell County Sheriff's Office says around 6:15 p.m., multiple people reported seeing the assault suspect, James Kerton, walking along Stillman Valley Road in West Bell County.

Deputies responded to the area and chased Kerton after he ran into the woods. BCSO says Kerton resisted the arrest but was eventually taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Kerton was taken to the Bell County Jail and will be booked on two outstanding warrants: failure to identify as a fugitive and evading arrest on foot from Friday morning's invident, and an additional evading arrest on foot for Friday evening's incident.

The BCSO Criminal Investigations Division is investigating the assault on the DPS Trooper from Friday morning and information on that incident will be presented to the Bell County District Attorney's Office.

UPDATE 3:38 P.M.:
Texas DPS and the Bell County Sheriff's Office says it has suspended search operations for assault suspect James Kerton. DPS says it will provide further updates on the investigation and if Kerton has been found.

UPDATE 2:08 P.M.:
The Bell County Sheriff's Office says it is now searching the Youngsport area, west of Stillhouse Lake for wanted man James Kerton.

If you see Kerton or know where he may be, call 911 immediately.

Law enforcement is asking you to take a close look at James Kerton.

Officers in Bell County are actively searching for Kerton in the area of FM 2484 and Iron Bridge Lane.

Texas DPS says he's accused of assaulted a Texas DPS Trooper on Friday morning, after troopers saw him camping near the entrance to a rock quarry.

Records show Kerton has an active warrant for sexual assault out of New Jersey. If you see him, do not approach him — call 9-1-1.
