UPDATE: Deputies arrest Hill County man in connection to explosives found on bridge

UPDATE

Deputies from both Hill and McLennan counties, along with Texas Rangers and state troopers, arrested a man in connection to reported explosions Friday, July 25.

Authorities executed a search warrant in the 500 block of West Hackberry Street in Malone Friday afternoon, following multiple reports of nighttime explosions in the area.

Authorities previously found an improvised explosive device on Ash Creek Bridge Wednesday, July 23, prompting the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad to intervene. The bridge was temporarily closed but reopened after safety checks.

Through the investigation, authorities identified Michael Louis Degner, 48, of Malone, as a suspect. He was arrested on charges of Disorderly Conduct and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. More charges are expected per the Hill County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say there is no threat to the public at this time.

ORIGINAL STORY

A heavy police presence was in Malone, near Sycamore Street, Friday afternoon.

A deputy on scene told 25 News that they were searching for someone at two nearby properties since 1:30 p.m.

A SWAT vehicle was seen using its battering ram to smash into a structure. Hill County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad, Hill County Emergency Services fire crews and Texas DPS were also on scene.
