BELTON, TX — As the spring weather begins to sizzle, many are enjoying the great outdoors with a hike through the woods. But as more make treks through the countless winding trails of Central Texas, they are reminded to take caution.

“If you know Texas, you know it hasn’t been the best weather lately. So we just got out of school, grabbed our friends and came to enjoy a nice hike,” said Payton Miller, an avid hiker.

Some popular hiking trails eroded due to recent flooding and driving rains, which can cause difficult hiking conditions. Along some trails, rangers have closed sections to prevent further erosion. Hikers should abide by marked signs.

Crews were dispatched to Chalk Ridge Falls in Belton for a rescue Wednesday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. A hiker in distress was reported on a trail. Firefighters say the victim suffered a broken leg.

It is unclear of how the accident unfolded. However, it serves as a reminder to take precautions. The extra steps listed below can help ensure a safe and exciting hiking adventure.

  • Hikers should always wear proper footwear. Many rescue missions are due to ankle injuries.
  • It is important to travel in a group.
  • Stay hydrated and bring extra bottles of water.
  • Hikers should check the weather before a hike.

In the event of an emergency, hikers should call 911 for assistance.
