WACO, TX — Waco police are investigating after a child was found injured at a bus stop on Friday.

Waco police said a 5-year-old girl was dropped off at the bus stop of Serena Lane and Coasta Drive. As the bus was pulling away, the Midway ISD student went back into the street to pick something up. When she did, the back tire of the bus ran over her.

The child was conscious after the incident.

It was bus 150 from Midway ISD, and no one on the bus, which was full of elementary-aged children, was injured.

Midway ISD released students on the bus to parents with proper identification.

Police said the girl was rushed to Hillcrest Hospital and later transferred to McLane Children's Medical Center in Temple due to the severity of her injuries.

“At this time it looks like it was just a horrific accident but our investigation continues,” Waco Police Spokesman Sgt. Patrick Swanton said.

A statement was released to the parents of the students who were on the bus:

"Parents of CCE Bus 150,

Bus 150 was in an accident near Sendero Springs. We have sent two buses to pick up the students and take them back to Castleman Creek. At the campus, we will need to document every student before releasing them to parents or resuming a bus route. We apologize in advance that this may be a lengthy process. Please go to Castleman Creek to pick up your student. We will send follow up information shortly."

Dr. Mandy Johnson, the principal at Castleman Creek Elementary school, made a statement on the incident:

"CCE Parents,

This afternoon we had a serious situation occur during an afternoon bus drop off near Sendero Springs. A student was injured after exiting the bus. Our hearts and prayers go out to the young lady as she is being treated for injuries. The remaining 14 students returned to school so we could connect them with their parents. We appreciate everyone’s concern, patience while reconnecting students with their parents, and continued thoughts and prayers for healing for the young lady.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mandy Johnson"
