Schools in Central Texas are taking steps to prevent deadly school shootings like the one at a California high school that claimed at least 2 students' lives.

Johnny Price is an instructor with Big Iron School Guardian Training. He travels around Central Texas to train faculty and students on how to stay alive in the event of an active shooter.

"You have to get teachers out of their normal thinking and not be the nurturer. They've got to now be the defender and protector, and they've got to fight with everything they got," said Price.

Price creates active shooter scenarios to make sure staff is ready for a potential active shooter situation. He shows that even balls or toys in a classroom can be used as a weapon to take down a shooter.

"I want to see them safe. I want to see them grow up and make an impact on the world," said Price.

The Texas Association of School Boards said of the nearly 1,300 school districts in Texas, just over 300 districts allow staff to carry firearms.

Price said he conducts safety training at about 5 schools every month, but wants to see districts start doing active shooter drills much like tornado and fire drills.

"If the training saves some lives, and it will, then it's all worth it," said Price.
