WACO, TX — Inspiring the younger generation is exactly what Hispanic Leaders in Waco are stepping up to do.

"By showing them that they can be a great leader, to support them and let them know that they have a voice," said Elaine Botello, Co-Founder of the Hispanic Leaders Network.

Since 2018, the Hispanic Leaders Network is constantly adding passionate leaders to join and support current and future leaders. Dr. Iliana Neumann is one of them. Her story shedding light on the hardships she faces as a young Hispanic growing up in the United States.

"My journey as a Chicana in this country has been one where often doors have been closed, I remember in high school I wanted to talk with my counselor about the SAT test and she said 'Oh, it's not for people like you' and so I figured it out and was accepted to Duke University."

Dr. Neumann is not alone, Joel Martinez, Director of Aviation, has also shared his own story about growing up in Waco.

"I am the youngest of 10 siblings so my parents really instilled the value of education and hard work as far as building determination to work through adversity and work through different challenges," said Joel Martinez, Director of Aviation for the City of Waco.

Both Dr. Neumann and Martinez have been speakers for previous Hispanic Leaders Network Luncheons. Their stories motivating others to push for what they want to accomplish in life regardless of their background.

Isabela Lozano, a current junior at Texas A&M and entrepreneur says she is proud of her Hispanic roots and is thankful for the encouraging stories.

"I loved hearing the different leaders in my community show us that it can be done and that they came through the same community that we did," said Isabela Lozano.

As Waco continues growing, their goal is for more Hispanic representation on boards and organizations throughout the Greater City of Waco.

The Hispanic Leaders Network will be hosting its annual luncheon today from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. They are excited to host "A Heartfelt Conversation" with Waco City Councilmen, Hector Sabido where he will be sharing his story as the keynote speaker.

The event is free and going virtual. You can tune in through the Hispanic Leaders Network Facebook page. You can also register for it HERE.
