Over the past three weeks, Caritas has seen a 300 percent increase in people needing food assistance.
It takes a huge financial toll on the food bank and is draining, mentally and physically, for the workers who are continuing operations without volunteers during the pandemic.
“In the efforts of doing this all day everyday, it can be very stressful over a period of time. We just feel we have a very important role in the community and our staff is committed to it, and they want to be involved in it,” said Buddy Edwards.
Caritas workers know the risk, but continue to work tirelessly to help feed the Waco Community every week and show a little kindness while they’re at it.
“We are in there working together, filling carts together, and then loading the carts together. Its just important to remember its not about us, again, it’s the people we are serving,” said Andrew Bryngelson.
The Caritas Board of Directors decided it was time to show a little love and appreciation for 24/7 dedication, so today a parade of first responders during their morning delivery.
“We were waving to them and they were waving to us. It was just kinda a solidarity moment where we knew that we were respected and encouraged and supported by our first responders as well as the community,” said Andrew Bryngelson.
Firemen, police officers, and even some local radio stations providing a little reminder that Caritas’ service to the community does not go unnoticed.
A smile and a wave can go a long way. KXXV thanks our essential workers and our first responders for putting themselves at risk serve our community during COVID-19.
