Two school districts in McLennan County are adamantly working towards stopping vaping use on campus. Robinson ISD and Lorena ISD are installing sensors in school bathrooms that can sense vaping.

At Robinson ISD, they have had these sensors installed for about a month, and the sensors have already gone off numerous times. They have installed Halo Smart Sensors . These sensors can pick up whether the student is vaping nicotine or another substance like THC.

When the sensor detects vaping, it will send a text message to administration to let them know about it.

Lorena ISD is installing a similar sensor, and they should all be installed by the end of the week.

More than 44,000 students took part in the 2018 annual survey of drug, alcohol, and cigarette use in 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. About 37% of 12th graders reported vaping in 2018, compared with 28% in 2017. Vaping of each substance that was asked about increased. This includes nicotine, flavored liquids, marijuana, and hash oil.
