WACO, TX — Officers arrested a man for burglary and evading arrest Monday after he was caught stealing items from a parking lot near a Waco Police and Firefighter event.

Waco Police officers along with Waco Firefighters were attending a fund-raising event at the Waco Axe Co. at 1526 Washington Ave for the loss of a fellow first responder who worked for AMR.

While the off-duty Waco officers were participating in the event, they were notified of an individual outside in the parking lot area that was seen potentially stealing items from a pickup truck, according to Waco Police Officer Garen Bynum.

While off-duty, the officers responded and located the man later identified as Clinton Deshaun Norman.

As officers identified themselves to Norman, he fled the scene.

After a brief foot chase, Norman was caught and detained near N. 13th and Barnard.

Police say there were multiple items recovered after the foot chase, including the one he was stealing at the time the incident started.

It was recovered and returned to the owner.

Norman was taken to jail by on-duty officers who responded to the chase and was later charged with evading arrest and burglary of a motor vehicle.

"This was an incredible effort by all officers involved, including Interim Police Chief Frank Gentsch, who joined his officers in this fun-filled crime-fighting endeavor! Great Job Chief and everyone else involved," Waco Police said on Facebook.
