WACO, TX — Northbound I-35 mainlane traffic near downtown Waco will shift to new temporary lanes starting Tuesday night.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), begining at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16, northbound I-35 mainlane traffc will shift to new temporary lanes between 4th Street and 18th Street.

According to TxDOT, the change will allow work crews to begin installing new box culverts that will ultimately direct the movement of Waco Creek under the highway.

Starting Tuesday night, northbound and southbound traffic in the area will each be limited to two lanes. There will a concrete barrier between the two directions. TxDOT says all exits currently open will remain open during the switchover and in the new configuration, which is expected to be in place for about two months, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen problems.

Once the culverts are installed under the existing northbound mainlanes, TxDOT says all traffic will be switched to the northbound side from 18th Street to 4th Street while crews complete the work on the west side of the highway. During that switch, crews will begin removing and rebuilding the southbound lanes, which is expected to take approximately one year, weather permitting and barring any unforeseen problems.
