RIESEL, TX — The McLennan County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a high school student was shot to death by his mother in Riesel Monday.

During a press conference, the sheriff's office said around 7:53 AM, Riesel PD received a call that there was an individual in a vehicle on E Frederick Rd east of Riesel that was unresponsive.

Further investigation determined that the individual had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim was identified as Garrett Hunt, a 17-year-old high school student at Riesel High School.

The investigation revealed he was on his way to school and he had been shot multiple times by his mother, 39-year-old Sarah Hunt.

Sarah Hunt was arrested and will be charged with murder after being picked up walking into Riesel after the incident.

Deputies said the victim was in the passenger seat and he and his mother were driving together.

Sheriff Parnell McNamara said they were new to Riesel and multiple family members live in the area.

Waco ISD confirmed Sarah Hunt is a fifth-grade science and social studies teacher at Lake Air Montessori.

Prior to that, she worked in Andrews ISD.

"We have not been in contact with Ms. Hunt yet, however when we are able to communicate with her, she will be placed on administrative leave and given an opportunity to resign. If she does not resign, we'll begin the process of terminating her probationary contract," said Waco ISD Executive Director for Communications Joshua Wucher.

"This is a terrible tragedy and our prayers are with Ms. Hunt and her family. Our counselors are available for any students or staff members who would like to talk with someone about this difficult situation. They plan to offer group sessions via Zoom and will also be talking with students and staff one-on-one, as needed for support," Wucher said in a statement.

The victim's body has been sent for an autopsy.

The investigation is continuing and Sarah Hunt was transported to McLennan County Jail. Her bond is set at $500,000.

They do not have a motive at this point.
