WACO, Texas — A suspect is in custody Wednesday morning, after a late-night shooting that turned into a standoff situation.

According to Waco Police, officers with the Lone Star U.S. Marshals Task Force were attempting to apprehend a wanted fugitive at a home in the 3700 block of Hay Avenue around 10:45 Tuesday night.

The suspect, Kevin Kirven, then started firing on officers from inside the home. Officers returned fire and retreated to safety.

They then called Waco Police and the McLennan Co. Sheriff's Department for assistance.

Waco police SWAT and negotiators responded and took over the scene. They were assisted by the McLennan County SWAT team and Bomb Squad.

Some nearby homes were temporarily cleared and nearby streets blocked off.

After at least 30 minutes of negotiations, officers were able to get the suspect to come out of the home and surrender peacefully.

Kirven has been arrested and booked into the McLennan County Jail on multiple charges, according to Waco police. His charges include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and criminal mischief.

Further charges are pending, and this investigation is ongoing.
