WACO, TX — One Waco distillery is switching gears to make a critical item for people and first responders.

Balcones Distillery is using the alcohol they have to make hand sanitizers. The distillery started making the sanitizer Tuesday and will package it into small plastic bottles.

Most of the hand sanitizers, along with surface cleaners, will be distributed by Waco-McLennan County Emergency Management. They will then delivery the products to police officers and other first responders.

"Once we realized there were other distilleries that were putting their facilities to good use, we realized it would of been a missed opportunity for us to not do it," said Thomas Mote, the production manager for Balcones Distillery. "As it got on the news, we got a dozen of requests for it."

Balcones will continue to sell the sanitizer temporarily since stores are running out of them. The distillery will offer curbside pick-ups for the sanitizers by next week.
