TEXAS — A Waco heart clinic is offering free screenings for teens in the area.

Waco Cardiology Associates will offer heart screenings for children ages 14-18 on Aug. 3. The health screening and health fair will be from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event will screen students for possible genetic heart conditions such as hypertrophic cardioyopathy (HCM). Student athletes are especially encouraged to attend the screening.

Cardiologists, interventional cardiologists and clinical cardiac electrophysiologists with the clinic will offer screenings that consist of a 2D echocardiograph to detect HCM.

HCM is a genetic heart condition. It could cause fatal rhythm problems that occur during exercise.

The clinic said that it is estimated that 1 in 250 students are at risk of heart abnormalities.

Students must have a signed waiver from their parents in order to participate in the screening.

Pre-registration is available at www.wacocardiology.com.
