COLLEGE STATION, TX — Local transportation officials are urging pedestrians to closely follow the pedestrian crossing rules when crossing University Avenue in College Station.

An estimated 18,000 pedestrians cross the University Avenue corridor each day. One of the main concerns officials have is those who cross the roadway diagonally rather than remain in the crosswalks.

"We're really trying to help people understand what it takes to be safe. It's not that much extra time to stay in the crosswalk, and we're really trying to get ahead of any problem that may exist with folks maybe taking a little bit longer to cross and putting themselves in a hazardous situation," said Tim Lomax, a research fellow at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

University and city officials have added more time to pedestrian crossings, but are still urging pedestrians to cross safely to prevent any accidents.
