U.S. News and World Report has listed Killeen in the top five for best places to live in Texas.

Killeen took the number five spot, coming behind San Antonio.

Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston rounded out the top three.

They reached number five for a number of reasons like low unemployment rates which the chamber of commerce says is greatly due to Fort Hood.

”I think that the low unemployment rate has a lot to do with the fact that we are a military town," said Jennifer Hetzel, Director of Research for Killeen Chamber of Commerce. "We have a lot of soldiers in our community as well as a lot of people that work on post for the DoD, contractors, ect. So, that have very stable employment.”

Here are the top 10 best places to live in Texas, according to U.S. News and World Report.

  • Austin
  • Dallas-Fort Worth

  • San Antonio
  • Killeen
  • Corpus Christi
  • Beaumont

”When they rate those cities I think they know what each city has to offer," said Jose Segarra, Mayor of Killeen.

Over the years Killeen has had bad image due to crime rates but the mayor says the community can change that.

"I would say just become an ambassador and start talking to people about all the great things that the City of Killeen has to offer.”
