UPDATE STORY:
A high-speed chase took place on Thursday on West Adams Avenue in Temple, ending in Belton with a crash and an officer-involved shooting, according to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 2:50 a.m. when a Bell County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to stop a speeding red Ford Mustang on W. Adams in Temple. The driver fled, leading deputies on a chase down I-35 into Belton, where the Mustang exited the interstate.

The driver failed to yield and collided with a gray SUV at the intersection of S. Main Street and the S. I-35 frontage road. One occupant of the Mustang fled on foot, and a person of interest believed to be the runner is now in custody.

Officers observed the other Mustang occupant armed with a firearm. Multiple law enforcement officers fired their weapons, striking the individual, who was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. The SUV driver was also hospitalized for injuries sustained in the crash.

No law enforcement officers were injured.

The Texas Rangers are investigating, and the deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as well as the Belton Police officer who also fired their weapon. Authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Placing an officer on administrative leave following a shooting is a standard practice that allows authorities time to determine the facts of a shooting and assess the welfare of the officer.
