San Antonio officer shot by suspect he was chasing

Posted

A San Antonio police officer was shot on Tuesday morning by a suspect he was chasing.

Last Saturday, the suspect was accused of shooting at the owner of a vehicle he was trying to steal.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said the officer was on patrol looking for the stolen license plate from that car.

When the officer found it, he drove behind the vehicle. The suspect then fled and crashed into an apartment complex gate on Hamilton Wolfe Road, got out and ran down a corridor as the officer chased behind.

McManus said the suspect hid behind a wall and shot the officer in the upper chest/shoulder area. The officer, who was wearing body armor, returned the fire and hit the suspect twice.

Both the suspect and the officer were taken to the hospital, where the officer is in stable condition. McManus said the suspect is "not doing well."

McManus said the charges for the suspect may face are not certain, but he added an attempted murder charge was a possibility.

In a press conference, McManus praised the officer, who has been with the force for one year, for his work.
