A newborn baby girl was found alone, lying in a California road during freezing temperatures early Monday morning.

The California Highway Patrol - Central Division said a newspaper carrier found the newborn around 4 a.m. in Madera County. She was dressed in a soiled onesie during weather that was just below 30 degrees.

Officials said the newspaper carrier took the baby inside his car and called 911.

When CHP arrived, the hours-old baby was given a blanket for warmth before she was taken to a local hospital for treatment in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The Madera County Sheriff's Office said they are searching for the mother, who is accused of leaving the baby on the side of the road.

California has a Safely Surrendered Baby Law allowing parents to safely surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth at designated safe drop-off sites.
