NOGALES, AZ — Authorities closed the DeConcini Port of Entry near Nogales after a man was shot attempting to run over a border patrol agent on Thursday night.

According to Nogales Mayor Arturo Garino, a man was attempting to cross the border from the United States into Mexico when a border patrol agent asked him to stop.

Garino said the man was shot by officers after reportedly trying to run over the agent.

The vehicle's momentum caused it to roll into Mexico.

The Nogales Police Department said only outgoing traffic into Mexico was impacted and travelers were advised to use the Mariposa crossing. Entry to the U.S. was not affected.

Officers were out directing traffic at Grand Avenue and Crawford Street, police said.

A message seeking comment from U.S. Customs and Border Protection was not immediately returned.

Further details were not immediately available.
